## Describe the service environment

A structure inside a dry building operates differently from elements exposed to weather or industrial processes. Give the designer information about location, service conditions and maintenance access. Selecting a protection system requires an assessment of the specific project.

## Agree the whole system, not just the colour

Colour is only one part of the specification. Documentation should define surface preparation, the coating system or other protection method, and inspection arrangements. Agree changes before work begins so the investor and contractor share the same expectations.

## Account for transport and erection

Surface protection does not end when steel leaves the paint shop. Agree how components will be protected during transport and storage, and how any damage will be addressed. Define responsibility for site touch-up work and the required acceptance records.
